John Calipari's red-hot Kentucky Wildcats (29-1, 15-0) roll into Gainesville today looking to cap off a perfect 16-0 season in the SEC. As we get closer the, age-old question "Do we need to lose one" is getting asked. To me, it's simple. If you have lost before, and this team has, the feeling of losing isn't going to be any different than it was the first time.
I am a firm believer that more can be learned from a tough road win than a loss. To be down in a hostile environment and to persevere when it looks like all odds are against you. That is a much better "lesson learned" than a loss.
Being battle tested isn't defined by having losses. It's defined by taking a good teams best shot and standing up to it. We did that at Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Miss. St, and Indiana. All would have been wins had it not been for a last second 3 pointer. To me, that's battle tested.
A loss isn't going to help make this team special. They are special. I know it, you know it, and they know it. 16-0 doesn't happen often. If it happens, enjoy it. If it doesn't happen, then we got beat by a good team in a hostile environment. But I will tell you this, if they do lose, it isn't going to feel any different than it did in Indiana.
