Opening Day is Here
Today marks the official start of spring, yes spring starts February 17, forget what your mom, teacher, doctor or whoever told you it was sometime in March. Spring officially starts on opening day for baseball season and that is TODAY!
The University of Tennessee Diamond Vols kick the season off today against Northern Illinois at Lindsey Nelson Stadium at 4PM. Head Coach Dave Serrano steps up to the plate big time as he leads his Vols back across the chalk. Serrano has had success at every stop he has made during his coaching career and returns to Tennessee hoping to inject some life back into a fluttering program. The Vols have been on a steady decline since the 2005 World Series team coach by Rod Delmonico.
Delmonico was fired following a lifeless 2007 and replaced by Todd Raleigh, fired following 2011, who took the program to a 7-23 conference record in 2011. Serrano comes in having made the NCAA tournament 6 straight years in stops at UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton including trips to Omaha in 2007 with Irvine and 2009 with Fullerton. Serrano has his work cut out for him and Vol fans know that, Monday the SEC Preseason Coaches predictions were released with the Vols picked to finish last in the 12 team league. The task put before him is to restore the Vols to a perennial NCAA team and make some World Series appearance, but not have the drop offs that plagued Delmonico.
At Tennessee baseball will never be anything close to what football or men's and women's basketball are but needs to be a respectable program and not lose money. With the SEC's recent dominance in Omaha there is no excuse for Serrano not to turn the program around and that task starts today, so lets supports the new head coach Dave Serrano and his 2012 edition of the Tennessee Diamond Vols.
