Just like all season, multiple teams brought their best stuff to the diamond this weekend to challenge the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide softball team. And, just like all season, those teams were sent back home with their tails between their legs and the knowledge that they had faced the best team in the country.
Coach Patrick Murphy's Tide saw their record improve to 17-0 this weekend after a 19-1 thrashing over Maryland on Friday, and a 8-0 victory over UMass on Saturday to go along with another defeat of the Terps that afternoon by a score of 9-1. A 4-1 Sunday victory over UAB was the Tide's second defeat of the Blazers this season. The Tide beat UAB 8-1 back on February 21st of this season.
Alabama was led by Tournament MVP Jackie Traina, who went 3-0 on the weekend while pitching 12 scoreless innings and striking out 15. The All-American saw her season record improve to 10-0. Freshman Leslie Jury pitched a complete game Saturday against the Terps while allowing only 1 run and stiking out 11.
Freshman Danielle Richard, sophomore Ryan Iamurri, and senior Amanda Locke joined Traina on the All-Tournament team. Locke was 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI while belting her 5th homerun of the season. Iamurri went 2 for 6 with one run scored and 3 RBI while playing mostly as a pinch hitter. She also hit her first homerun of the season. Richard was 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.
Alabama hosts Samford Wednesday night at 7 pm CT to finish off it's 10 game homestand.
