We warned you about this winning phenomenon that was about to sweep over SECJams on Mondays, and today we bring you the second. There are a lot of factors we considered before giving out this award each week. They include the following; magnitude of the story, the impact on the community, the impact to the university, and most importantly did the program, university, or person WIN.
This week’s award will go to the University of Kentucky’s Men’s Basketball Team. The game was as good as advertised, and looked like a Lakers game with Jay-Z, Ashley Judd, and NBA scouts in attendance. So, if the game was good enough for Jay-Z it is good enough for SECJams to declare that the Kentucky Wildcats Basketball Team is WINNING.
Kentucky the third ranked team in the country has a strong hold on the number one spot in our weekly power poll, and ended the week with a huge win in the battle of the bluegrass. Kentucky defeated number four Louisville 69-62 to improve to 13-1 on the year. They were led by freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who stepped up for the young Cats.
Kidd-Gilchrist might have the best name in all of college basketball this year, and with the way he plays it will only be for one year. Kidd-Gilchrist had a season high 24 points in the game against Louisville, and added 19 rebounds to go with the 24 points. Those were both season and career highs for the young 6’-7” forward.
Kentucky dominated the game only trailing once at the start of the game when they were down 2-0. After that, the Cats took over and took a 15 point lead early in the first half. Early on it looked like Louisville was not going to be able to matchup with the Cats. But they eventually pulled back in thanks to the play of Russ Smith, who had 30 points and 5 rebounds on the night. However his 30 points were not good enough for the Cardinals at the end of the night.
The Cardinals were able to tie the game at 40 early in the second half; but then Kentucky blew away with a 7-0 run. The exclamation point came with 6:40 left when a big block by Davis led to a follow up alley-oop from Lamb and gave the Cats the 56-48 lead. After this sequence of plays you could feel this game was Kentucky’s to take, and they did 69-62.
This game marked 44 straight victories at home for the Cats, and puts them one in front of the Duke Blue Devils who have 43. They say this game was the most hyped game in the series since the 1983 season opener when Kentucky then number 2, defeated number six ranked Cardinals. I would not be surprised if you see these two teams playing each other down the road, and if the season plays out right it might just be in the Final Four.
